Set within the farmlands of Thindal, Erode, the residence for Lokesh and Thenmozhi is shaped by its landscape and climate. A contemporary reinterpretation of the tinnai forms a deep, shaded edge along the north and east, mediating between house and field, and enabling outdoor life throughout the day. The architecture brings together landscape, climate, and cultural practices into a cohesive whole, where openness is always tempered by a calibrated sense of privacy. The entry axis is anchored by a pooja room placed directly opposite the main door, establishing a quiet sense of order. Beyond, the house unfolds as a singular, open volume where living, dining, kitchen, and staircase coexist. A skylit courtyard introduces light, air, and a moment of pause within this continuity. Private rooms are aligned along the west, buffered for comfort and seclusion. The architecture brings together openness and intimacy, grounding everyday life within its cultural and agrarian context.

The process
The design process began with a careful reading of the site, understanding its climate, orientation, and relationship to the surrounding farmlands. Early explorations focused on establishing a spatial framework that could balance openness with privacy, while responding to heat, light, and wind conditions. Cultural elements such as the tinnai and the positioning of the pooja room were reinterpreted to suit a contemporary lifestyle, guiding the overall planning logic. Iterative studies of massing, circulation, and thresholds helped shape a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. Material and structural decisions were made in alignment with local context and long-term usability, resulting in a cohesive design that integrates environment, function, and cultural intent.
